CIVIL WAR RAIL TRAIL

Washington-Hagerstown Maryland

THE CIVIL WAR TRAIL

For those people who advocate and support healthy recreation and exercise accommodations and also alternative transportation. Also for those people who revel in Civil War History. The goal here is to foster and grow support for construction of a public park, known as the Civil War Rail Trail, located in Washington County, Maryland.

To achieve this goal, one primary object is to rally a ground-swell of support for lobbying the Washington County Government, the City of Hagerstown Government, and the Maryland State Government.

Briefly, the Civil War Rail Trail is best described as a Family Health and Recreation Trail. It accommodates people of all ages and the handicapped. It serves for walking, jogging, bicycling, wheel-chairing, and winter skiing. It offers benefits, of health, fitness, recreational, educational, cultural, commuting, and tourism.

The park will feature a trail path, either paved or hard-packed gravel, about 10 feet in width. The trail path will be situated inside of a 24-mile long railroad corridor that has an average width of 66 feet. The trail will run in a north-south direction, starting at City Park in Hagerstown and end at the C&O Canal Towpath which is adjacent to the Potomac River. At the junction with the Towpath, one can either follow the Towpath trail to Washington D.C. to the east or to the City of Pittsburgh to the west.

Attesting to the CWRT’s expected success is the Western Maryland Rail Trail located in western Washington County. Because of remarkable success, this trail has been lengthened three times since its original construction in 1998. This trail has been a remarkable economic engine for the town of Hancock. In the year 2015, the WMRT counted over 150,000 trail users.
